I chose my new gym for convenience, but...

My new house in the DC suburbs is right off a main drag called Rockville Pike. Basically every type of store, and restaurant from every culture, is on Rockville Pike. So is my gym.

Since I now live 3 miles from my parents, the closest gym to my house is also the gym where my mom goes. There’s a fancy schmancy really expensive gym closer to their house but she doesn’t mess with that place. So even though I run the risk of my mom occasionally surprising me in the middle of bench pressing, I signed up at the same gym as her.

It’s in a shopping center on Rockville Pike with a whole bunch of restaurants. For my rabbit food eating self, there’s a Chipotle and a Halal Guys. There’s also a fancy ginseng and bubble tea place. There’s a BBQ place, a Habit Burger, a Dunkin Donuts, a Japanese place, a frozen yogurt place, and maybe something else I’m forgetting. Just in this one strip mall on Rockville Pike.

So....last night, after my workout, we didn’t really have meals prepped at home. I was like, hmm do I want a tofu burrito at Chipotle or falafel from Halal Guys? And I got the falafel. And it was good. Very good. And I can get it any time I go to the gym.

Maybe I should’ve picked a less convenient gym.

They all do, at least all the ones back in Madison did, and same in DC. They call it sofritas but it’s braised tofu.

Yeah that’s something I’ll check out at some point. Right now my weekends are busy with finishing up stuff with our house like furniture shopping. There are also smaller C&C’s in Potomac and Bethesda.

Ha, I was about to compliment the screenname. We used to hand out extremely hot nuclear tacos at SXSW and textured soy protein was the vegetarian option. It was always sneaky-hot because there was no animal fat to mute the heat, too. Good stuff.

Man, I’m not sure what to do with my gym situation. I’m further from my existing gym, which is reasonably priced and has a lot of classes. It’s good because there’s a Coffee Bean drive-thru on the way out. Closer are the couple fancy-gyms which seem like they’d be nice, but eh. I’m already stretching it to move and that’d put me even further into brokeness. The Y’s a little further and seems good, but even it’s a jump in price. Like, $10 a month more, but still: grumble.

Is Halal Guys any good? We just got one here. I think the halal carts near the Jalop home offices kinda ruined halal food for me forever, though. So huge. So filling. Every gyro here is teeny tiny in comparison.

I only know of a few places where I can get it where I live, and I’ve yet to find one that’s a good approximation of the delicious milk tea with boba that I had years ago in Hong Kong...

Halal Guys portions are suitably generous. I got a falafel plate which they ask you if you want regular or small. Regular you get a big pile of rice, 5 falafel balls, a pita, lettuce, tomato, and your choice of toppings and sauces. Hummus, baba ganoush, or tabbouleh are $1 extra.

I’d be so happy there. Here in the States, I much prefer Vietnamese or Thai to a Chinese buffet, but when I went to China, we had someone with us that basically just dictated all of our meals for us, and I was pretty much in gastronomic heaven for two weeks.

Learned that I’m not a fan of chicken feet and that beef intestine is very chewy.

Falafel is amazing.

A Habit Burger just opened near me and it’s legit the best fast food burger I’ve had. I liked it better than Shake Shack - fight me.

Unfortunately for me, Habit Burger lists their veggie burger as having egg in it in some way. Don’t know if it’s the bun or the patty.

There’s a local chain of fancy diners called Silver Diner and they have the Beyond Burger there. Supposedly the buns have no dairy or eggs in them.
